abstract = "The Paraiba do Sul river flows through the States of S{\~a}o
Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, and is among the most
important rivers of Brazil. Over the past decades, the river
course experienced substantial changes in its geomorphology. This
study aims to evaluate the progressive change of the river course
in its flow through S{\~a}o Paulo state, based on historical
cartographic data and on recent remote sensing images. It was
observed that the river course significantly changed over the past
few decades with reduced sinuosity when compared to the IBGE data
(1960s). The major purpose of this river course rectification was
                         to make it navigable.",
