ResumoThe potential increase in convective activity and severity, caused by urban heat island effect, is verified in this work with tests using BRAMS model, based on the construction of different urbanization scenarios and on the use of the Town Energy Budget parameterization. Present and two future urban scenarios, based on Sao Paulo´s municipality master plan, were constructed in order to analyse possible impact on formation and development of a severe weather case occurred over the Metropolitan Area of Sao Paulo (MASP). Future urban scenarios for 2030 considered 1) horizontal growth without changes in the heights of actual buildings and; 2) a situation that all actual constructions of small dimensions could be replaced by high rising buildings (vertical growth). These scenarios were used to evaluate changes in rainfall, convective parameters, and consequently, in severe weather probability for the study region. Using the factor separation method, it was found that the urban area growth is capable to increase the amount of precipitation, mainly due to the land use change from rural to urban. In the scenario of building heights increasing, it was found a tendency for rainfall suppress. The horizontal urban area growth for 2030 is the major factor contributing to increase atmospheric instability and wind shear. The results also show that vertical urban growth can cause different impacts on atmospheric stability and wind shear. When considering the interaction between two factors it is possible to observe an increase in the amount of precipitation and storm motion to other parts of MASP.

ResumoSatellite-borne remote sensing data are useful for urban environment analysis owing to their improved spatial, spectral and radiometric resolution. The present study assesses the environmental impact of urban growth on the Western Sao Paulo Metropolitan Area from 1975 to 1985. Multidate digital data from MSS/LANDSAT, TM/LANDSAT and HRV-SPOT were registered and urban structure changes with that period was detected. Color composite photograph of TM band 5, 3 and 4 were applied to map the urban land use for new urban areas. HRV-SPOT panchromatic data, digitally enlarged to the scale of 1:10.000, were applied to urban structure mapping and environmental monitoring. Ground truth data collection and helicopter-borne data collection were used to complement the remote sensed data. Several environment degradation levels were determined and compared to the "physical Aptitude for Urban Settlement Chart". The results showed that environmental impacts are more related to the pattern of urban settlement than to the physiographic environmental change as far as orbital remote sensing is concerned. Soil erosion is caused by the removal of vegetative cover, but the erosion rates are controlled by the different patterns of land use.

ResumoThe urban growth monitoring of Sao Paulo Metropolitan region has been done by conventional techniques which involve a high cost sistematic control. On the other hand, the orbital remote sensing allows a continuous land use control at lower cost. For being under governmental control the region located between Billings and Guarapiranga reservoirs was chosen as test site for monitoring urban growth through LANDSAT data. Mapping the urban growth over the period from 1977 to 1979 and identifying the problematic urban areas with several LANDSAT products constitute the basic aims of this work. Visual and automatic interpretation techniques were applied to the data. Computer compatible tapes (CCT)of LANDSAT multispectral scanner data were analyzed through the Maximum Likelihood Gaussian algorithm. The results pointed out the feasible monitoring of fast urban growth by remote sensing techniques leading to an efficient urban planning and control.

ResumoThe dynamics and complexity of urban growth call for new ways to guide development in order to guarantee the sustainability of cities and the quality of life of its inhabitants. Rapid urbanization and the growth of large urban centres demand new strategies in urban planning and territorial organisation, especially at present when unplanned urban growth menaces the limited natural environment. The purpose of this paper is to verify the feasibility of high resolution images for recognition and the classification of features indispensable in urban planning. It tries to establish a methodology that could guide and generate thematic as well as analytical maps showing the dynamics of urban growth using the easiest and most reliable way to obtain spatial information from the image. The methodology applied is based on three norms: the organization of knowledge base from the semantic net; generate objects or features by means of image segmentation. In order to identify which descriptors could discriminate better the interest features multivariate statistic and principal components and discriminant analysis techniques were used, as a result potential descriptors were selected. Contextual information is important in creating objects closer to real features of the terrain and thus optimizing the segmentation process; in other words a creation of more realistic objects neither too fragmented nor too generalized. The proposed method will result in the behavior comprehension of relevant objects by estimating color, shape and dimensional parameters, which control the segmentation process. It should improve the vector representation and consequently the quality of the information extracted from high-resolution imagery. Box-plot were generated to evaluate better relationship between classes and object distribution besides descriptive statistics were also calculated to provide variables selection. Finally the classification process was achieved using those previously chosen descriptors to start up the classification process based on hierarchical classification. The image used in this study contains a panchromatic band and four multi spectral bands from the Quickbird sensor. The study is based on an informal settlement by the name of Guarituba, in the town of Piraquara, in the State of Paraná. The area is important as it is the location of springs which supply water to Curitiba, the capital of the State of Paraná, and its Metropolitan areas. The methodology proposed sounds very promising by means of Statistic Degree of Discrimination created based on bi-variate correlation and descriptive statistitics. The graphic Box-plot, was a useful tool to sort out the functions and parameters definition to perform the classification at urban environment.
