ResumoThe data, information and knowledge on the tropical forest area and dynamics in the Brazilian Amazon remain contentious. Here we generated annual forest maps of the Brazilian Amazon for 2000-2017, which were then used to quantify the annual dynamics of forest area, deforestation, and reforestation. Our annual forest maps revealed ~15% more forest area but annual rates of deforestation twice as high as those from the official Brazilian forestry statistics (PRODES). Over 90% of deforested areas occurred within 5-km of those areas deforested before 2002, a strong indicator of the spatial expansion dynamics of anthropogenic deforestation. Annual forest loss areas were high in those drought years with large amounts of fire and active fire events occurred in ~70% of deforested areas. Forest loss was substantially reduced within protected areas. We also reported the annual reforested area, which offset annual deforestation by about 21%.

ResumoMany forest cover maps have been generated by using optical and/or microwave images, but these forest cover maps have large area and spatial discrepancies. To date, few studies have assessed forest cover maps in terms of two biophysical parameters used in forest definition: (1) canopy height and (2) canopy coverage. We generated annual forest cover maps from 2007 to 2010 and evergreen forest cover maps from 2000 to 2021 in the Brazilian Amazon using the images from the Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar and the time series images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, using the forest definition of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (> 5-m tree height and > 10% canopy coverage) as the reference. We used the canopy height and canopy coverage datasets from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System during 2003-2007 to assess annual forest cover maps from 2007 to 2010 and annual evergreen forest cover maps from 2003 to 2007, and the results show high accuracy of these forest cover and evergreen forest cover maps in the Brazilian Amazon. These annual forest cover maps and annual evergreen forest cover maps provide data support for the analyses of the causes, process, and consequences of forest cover changes in the Brazilian Amazon.

ResumoThe data, information and knowledge on the tropical forest area and its dynamics in the Brazilian Amazon remain contentious. We use time-series satellite images to quantify annual forest area, loss and gain in the Brazilian Amazon during 2000-2017. We find that forest area was -15% higher than the estimate by the official Brazilian forest dataset (PRODES), but annual forest-loss rates were twice the PRODES estimates (-0.027 x 10(6) km(2) yr(-1) during 2001-2016). Forest-loss rates increased again after 2013. The El Nino and drought year (2015/2016) drove large forest area loss. The cumulative forest-loss area within the protected areas (which include -50% of forests in the region) was -11% of the total forest-loss area, which highlights the roles of protected areas in forest conservation.

ResumoBrazil contains two-thirds of remaining Amazonian rainforests and is responsible for the most Amazon forest loss. Primary forest loss in the Brazilian Amazon has declined considerably since 2004 but secondary forest loss has never been quantified. We use a recently developed high-resolution land use/land cover dataset to track secondary forests in the Brazilian Amazon over 14 yr, providing the first estimates of secondary forest loss for the region. We find that secondary forest loss increased by (187 +/- 48)% from 2008 to 2014. Moreover, the proportion of total forest loss accounted for by secondary forests rose from (37 +/- 3)% in 2000 to (72 +/- 5)% in 2014. The recent acceleration in secondary forests loss occurred across the entire region and was not driven simply by increasing secondary forest area but probably a conscious preferential shift towards clearance of a little-protected forest ecosystem (secondary forests). Our results suggest that secondary forests loss has eased deforestation pressure on primary forests. However, this has been at the expense of a lost carbon sequestration opportunity of 2.59-2.66 Pg C over our study period. Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon affects both older (primary) and younger (secondary) forests. This study finds that most forest loss over the period 2008-2014 was from secondary forests and that the almost 190% rise in deforestation buffered losses from primary forests.

ResumoThis paper presentes the relation between remote sensing and forest parameters obtained for two forest types at Tapajos National Forest, Par6 state, Brazil. It in part of the activities developed in the PRORADAR project, a INPE/CCRS cooperation, to evaluate RADARSAT capabilities for forest applications. The study area comprises the Tapaj6s National Forest, located between the coordinates of 55' 30' and 54' 36' west Longitude and 2' 30' and 40 18' south Latitude, south of Santarem city (Para state), Brazilian Amazon. Despite of several ongoing research projects in this study area, the National Forest is under a management program(Brazilian Institute of Renewable Resources - IBAMA)to explore its forest resources. Tropical Dense Forest, with abundant economic wood species, dominates the two principal geornorphological regions: Amazon Low Plateaus and Xingu and Tapaj6s High Plateaus. Forest parameters such as height (H), diameter at breast height (DBH)for emergent trees(trees with DBH bigger than 40 cm), and the relative Leaf Area Index (LAI)for each stand were measured. Radar Backscattering of RADARSAT fine mode images and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)and Reflectance values of LANDSAT 5 - TM constituted the remoting sensing parameters. Height, DBH and LAI measurements were taken from two different vegetation types at Tapajos National Forest, in October 1996. For each vegetation type analyzed, two sample areas were surveyed: one along 6 transects of 400 m and another along 3 transects of 200 m. LAI values were measured using LAI-2000 (LICOR). The forest measurements ewre positioned with a GPS reference on the field and imported into a GIS. A sernivariogram analysis was performed to evaluate the spatial relation between LAI measurements. It was obtained an average distance of 50 m from which the LAI measurements were not related to each other. The LAI, DBH and height values were used to generate a regular grid of the same spatial resolution as the remote sensing finest resolution (12.5 m x 12.5 m)Frorn the grid values, the average values of 50m x 50m were computed. LANDSAT 5 - TM image, acquired on July 08, 1996, was orthocorrected to the cartographic projection of the field work data and resampled to 12.5 m spatial resolution. For each sampled area, LANDSAT 5 TM, channels 3, 4, and 5 digital values were extracted, and NIDVI values were computed from channels 3 and 4. Four RADARSAT fine mode images, with different incidence angles (F2D and F5D), acquired in May and October 1996, were calibrated and ortho-corrected. They were resampled to the same pixel size as TM and Field data. The blackscattering values (Gamma nought)related to each sampled area were extracted and the average values (50m x 50m), 10 dB units were computed. Remote sensing variables were generally more correlated to height instead of LAI measurements, which can be assigned to the dossel structure variation. Medium correlation was obtained for RAIDARSAT fine mode (F2D)and channel 3 TM. The other resoults from correlation and multivariate regression between forest and remote sensing parameters were presented and discussed.

Capacity building project
ResumoThe aim of this paper is to present the Amazon Regional Center activities based on the Institute missions. Most of the mapping and monitoring projects from Amazon Program are fully developed on the center. In this article two projects will be described: mapping and monitoring land use and land cover areas (TerraClass) and capacity building, for knowledge transference based on INPEs experience on tropical forest monitoring. TerraClass aims to qualify based on satellite images, already deforested areas of the Amazon with biannual frequency. It evaluates the dynamic of land use land cover comparing the changes between the years of 2008 and 2010. The project is developed in partnership with Embrapa Oriental Amazon (CPATU) and Embrapa Information and Agriculture (CNPTIA). Aiming to be considered an international center of orbital technology diffusion on tropical forests monitoring, CRA conducts international training courses, periodically held and counting with specialized infrastructure and a wide number of qualified consultants that minister theoretical and practical classes in four different languages during the courses.

ResumoRemote sensing has been an essential tool in combating deforestation. However, the ever-rising deforestation rates require new remote sensing techniques. This paper presents a study to determine the effects on the accuracy of the data analysis of varying the number of satellite observations, using a Random Forest classification algorithm. We carried out experiments on the Landsat-8 data cube with 22 images and developed an automatic sampling system based on PRODES to generate the labeled time series. We split the time series dataset to build data subsets with different number of observations. The results showed that a fewer number of observations negatively effects the accuracy of the RF algorithm when analyzing deforested areas, but not forest areas. The RF classifiers were compared using a random test data set, where all classifiers presented an Overall Accuracy (OA), Balanced Accuracy (BA), and f1-score (F1) above 97%. In the first evaluation, the variation in the number of observations appears to cause little influence on the classification accuracy. The analysis used the reference map to contrast the RF classifier's results. The results showed that the best results in OA occurred with fewer observations. The best performance of 96% happened with four observations. We evaluated the performance of the classes, deforestation, and forest individually. The results showed that a fewer number of observations had negative effects on the accuracy of the RF algorithm when analyzing deforested areas, but not forest areas. Finally, we evaluated the visual quality of the land cover maps produced.

ResumoThis study estimates the aboveground biomass accumulation after forest clearing and slash burning and describes the structure and successional development of the secondary forest in the seasonally dry southern Amazon. The original burn study was conducted in four land clearings in 1997, 1998, and 1999. The size of the clearings varied from 1 to 9 ha. The native forest was felled, allowed to dry for approximately three months and then burned by the end of the dry season. A census was conducted in the central 1-ha forest on each site prior to the areas felling and burn. The aboveground biomass (AGB) and structure were similar to other primary tropical forests. However, the high density of Cecropia spp. before the forest felling and burn treatment indicates past low intensity disturbances. Seven and eight years after the fire, the fallow forests were still in an early successional stage dominated by Cecropia spp. The four areas had a high biomass accumulation during the studied period, varying from 7.5 to 15.0Mgha−1 year−1. The lower biomass accumulation in one plot was an effect of a higher fire severity, produced by the one-year difference in time between slash and burn of the forest, slowing the natural regeneration of Cecropia spp. The time needed for this forest to recover to the pre-fire AGB levels ranged from 20 to 30 years, assuming the current AGB accumulation rates are maintained. Considering these results, the maintenance of regenerating secondary forests in the Amazon would be a significant contribution to soil and watershed protection, minimizing biodiversity losses and perhaps mitigating climatic changes effects in the region.

ResumoKnowledge of the spatial patterns of successional stages (i.e., primary and secondary forest) in tropical forests allows to monitor forest preservation, mortality and regeneration in relation to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Different successional stages have also different capabilities of re-establishing carbon stocks. Therefore, a successful discrimination of successional stages over wide areas can lead to an improved quantification of above ground biomass and carbon stocks. The reduction of the mapping uncertainties is especially a challenge due to high heterogeneity of the tropical vegetation. In this framework, the development of innovative remote sensing approaches is required. Forests (top) height (and its spatial distribution) are an important structural parameter that can be used to differentiate between different successional stages, and can be provided by Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) acquisitions. In this context, this paper investigates the potential of forest heights estimated from TanDEM-X InSAR data and a LiDAR digital terrain model (DTM) for separating successional stages (primary or old growth and secondary forest at different stages of succession) by means of a maximum likelihood classification. The study was carried out in the region of the Tapajós National Forest (Pará, Brazil) in the Amazon biome. The forest heights for three years (2012, 2013 and 2016) were estimated from a single-polarization in bistatic mode using InSAR model-based inversion techniques aided by the LiDAR digital terrain model. The validation of the TanDEM-X forest heights with independent LiDAR H100 datasets was carried out in the location of seven field inventory plots (measuring 50 × 50 m, equivalent to 0.25 ha), also allowing for the validation of the LiDAR datasets against the field data. The validation of the estimated heights showed a high correlation (r = 0.93) and a low uncertainty (RMSE = 3 m). The information about the successional stages and forest heights from field datasets was used to select training samples in the LiDAR and TanDEM-X forest heights to classify successional stages with a maximum likelihood classifier. The identification of different stages of forest succession based on TanDEM-X forest heights was possible with an overall accuracy of about 80%.
