ResumoSoil moisture is being monitored over the Brazilian semiarid since 2014 using a network of 595 stations. The network was implemented by Cemaden, the National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters, with the objective of monitoring of spatial and temporal patterns of soil water and potential impacts on the regions agriculture activities. The Brazilian semiarid is the poorest in the country and hosts most of the family owned farms in Brazil. Crops such as maize and beans are mostly planted over small properties with no irrigation. In this work, agricultural risk is assessed using measurements of soil moisture which are presented in formats that highlight spatial, temporal and short-term variability. The Soil Moisture Index (SMI), based on a normalization of soil moisture by field capacity and wilting point, is used to characterize the current soil moisture conditions in a scale proportional to the water available to plants. The temporal evolution of SMI is used to visualize trends in short-term drought and response to rainfall events at daily time steps or recent weeks. A novel index based on continuous exposure to critical SMI is developed to help bring awareness of real time risk of water stress over the region: the Index of Stress in Agriculture (ISA). The index takes into account continuous exposure to a critical value of SMI (assumed as 0.4), below which water stress is expected to be triggered in plants. The index was tested during a short-term drought over the region and successfully identified locations under water stress for periods of three days or more. The monitoring tools presented here help to describe the real time conditions of drought over the region using daily observations. These tools are expected to be implemented over an online platform hosted at Cemadens website.

ResumoSoil moisture information is essential to monitoring of the intensity of droughts, the start of the rainy season, planting dates and early warnings of yield losses. We assess spatial and temporal trends of drought over the Brazilian semiaridregion by combining soil moisture observations from 360 stations, root zone soilmoisture from a leading land surface model, and a vegetation health index fromremote sensing. The soil moisture dataset was obtained from the network of sta-tions maintained by the National Center of Monitoring and Early Warning ofNatural Disasters (Cemaden), in Brazil. Soil water content at 10 to 35 cm depth, for the period 19792018, was obtained from running the JULES land surfacemodel (the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator). The modelled soil moisturewas correlated with measurements in the common period of 20152018, result-ing in an average correlation coefficient of 0.48 across the domain. The standard-izedsoilmoistureanomaly(SMA)wascalculatedforthelong-termmodelledsoilmoisture and revealed strong negative values during well-known drought peri-ods in the region, especially during El-Niño years. The performance of SMA inidentifying droughts during the first 2 months of the raining and cropping sea-son was similar to the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), commonly usedfor drought assessment: 1214 events were identified by both indices. Finally, thetemporal relationship between both SMA and SPI with the Vegetation HealthIndex (VHI) was assessed using the cross-wavelet transform. The results indi-cated lagged correlations of 1 to 1.5 months in the annual scale, suggesting thatnegative trends in SMA and SPI can be an early warning to yield losses during the growing season. Public policies on drought assessment should consider thecombination of multiple drought indices, including soil moisture anomaly.

ResumoSoil moisture over the Brazilian semiarid region is presented in different visualizations that highlight spatial, temporal and short-term agricultural risk. The analysis used the Soil Moisture Index (SMI), which is based on a normalization of soil moisture by field capacity and wilting point. The index was used to characterize the actual soil moisture conditions into categories from severe drought to very wet. In addition, the temporal evolution of SMI was implemented to visualize recent trends in short-term drought and response to rainfall events at daily time steps, as new data are available. Finally, a visualization of drought risk was developed by considering a critical value of SMI (assumed as 0.4), below which water stress is expected to be triggered in plants. A novel index based on continuous exposure to critical SMI was developed to help bring awareness of real time risk of water stress over the region: the Index of Stress in Agriculture (ISA). The index was tested during a drought over the region and successfully identified locations under water stress for periods of three days or more. The monitoring tools presented here help to describe the real time conditions of drought over the region using daily observations. The information from those tools support decisions on agricultural management such as planting dates, triggering of irrigation, or harvesting.

ResumoAn effort towards a more accurate representation of soil moisture and its impact on the modeling of weather systems is presented. Sensitivity tests of precipitation to soil type and soil moisture changes are carried out using the atmospheric Eta model for the numerical simulation of the development of a mesoscale convective system over northern Argentina. Modified initial soil moisture conditions were obtained from a hydrological balance model developed and running operationally at INPE. A new soil map was elaborated using the available soil profile information from Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina and depicts 18 different soil types. Results indicate that more accurate initial soil moisture conditions and incorporating a new soil map with hydraulic parameters, more representative of South American soils, improve daily total precipitation forecasts both in quantitative and spatial representations.

Soil Moisture
atmospheric Eta model
ResumoAB: Strong interactions between soil moisture and the atmospheric processes take place in all spatial and temporal scales. The effects of soil moisture on rainfall can be associated with dynamical modifications of atmospheric systems as well as the generation of mesoscale circulations through the formation of spatial sensible heat flux gradients. A new effort towards a more realistic representation of soil moisture and its impact on the modeling of weather systems is presented. The Eta model is chosen to perform numerical simulations over South America testing the sensitivity of precipitation to soil and soil moisture changes. In this sense, the meteorological situation analyzed is a cold front crossing southeastern South America which is followed by the development of a mesoscale convective complex over northern Argentina in October 2006. The ETA model was configured to run on a 40km grid resolution and 38 vertical levels on a domain which includes all of South America north of 40°S. Initial conditions used to force the Eta Model experiments are taken from the CPTEC global model (Bonatti 1996), as well as the lateral boundary conditions which are updated every 6 hours. The control run (CTRL) uses the NOAH land surface model, with a 4 layer soil model and 9 different types of soil. Three other experiments were performed in order to test the sensibility to modifications of a) initial soil moisture conditions (MOIST), b) a new soil map (MAP) and c) both initial soil mositure conditions and new soil map (M&M). Modified initial soil moisture conditions for the ETA simulations were obtained from a hydrological balance model developed and running operational at CPTEC. The model uses integrated daily precipitation obtained from TRMM product 3B42 version 6 on a 0.25° x 0.25° grid, and rain gauge observed precipitation collected by different institutions in Brazil and by the National Weather Services of Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. A new soil map was elaborated using the available soil profile information in the CPTEC/INPE soil data base. It includes information on soil profiles for Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. Each profile includes basic information such as soil types, texture classes, horizon depths, amount of organic carbon, etc. The different hydrological parameters defining each soil were obtained applying pedotransfer functions. The new soil map includes 16 different soil types. Results indicate that modifying inicial soil moisture conditions and incorporating a new soil map with hydraulic parameters, more representative of South American soils, improves rainfall forecasting both through a better spatial representation of precipitation and a daily total precipitation values. Although both CTRL and M&M overestimate the total precipitation of the MCC, M&M maximum precipitation is located closer to Presidente Roque Saenz Peña where the most intense precipitation was registered and the difference with the observed value is smaller.

South America
ResumoA study was performed to evaluate the surface soil moisture derived from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) sensor observations over South America. Other soil moisture and rainfall datasets were also used for the analysis. The information for the soil data came from the Eta regional climate model, and for the rainfall data from the Tropical Rainfall Microwave Mission (TRMM) satellite. Statistical analysis was used to evaluate the quality of the soil moisture and rainfall products, with estimates of the correlation coefficient (R), χ2 and Cramer's phi (φc). The results show high correlations (R > 0.8) of the AMSR-E soil moisture products with the Eta model for different regions of South America. Comparison of soil moisture products with rainfall datasets showed that the AMSR-E C-band soil moisture product was highly correlated with the TRMM satellite rainfall datasets, with the highest values of χ2 and φ. The results show that the AMSR-E C-band soil moisture products contain important information that can be used for various purposes, such as monitoring floods or droughts in arid areas or as input within the framework of an assimilation scheme of numerical weather prediction models.

Soil moisture downscaling
The Continental United States
Wide & Deep learning method
ResumoSoil moisture (SM) plays a critical role in drought monitoring, agricultural management, flood forecasting, and other practical applications. However, the relatively coarse spatial resolutions of SM products derived from passive microwave satellite retrievals (approximately 2555 km) greatly hamper their local-scale applications. In this research, we proposed an SM downscaling framework based on the Wide & Deep Learning (WDL) method to improve the spatial resolution of the level-3 daily composite of Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) radiometer SM product (L3_SM_P). In this method, horizontally and vertically polarized Brightness Temperature (TBh, and TBv, respectively), surface reflectance and Land Surface Temperature (LST), topographic attributes, soil properties, climate types, and landcover types collected in the Continental United States (CONUS) during the annual unfrozen season (April 1st to November 1st) from 2015 to 2017 were used as auxiliary datasets to downscale the spatial resolution of the SMAP SM (L3_SM_P) product from its original 36 km to 1 km. Precipitation and in-situ SM measurements obtained from 211 sites distributed across the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) over the CONUS were utilized to validate the downscaled SM. The results demonstrated that the correlation (R) between the downscaled and the in-situ SM ranged from 0.325 to 0.997; the average R value was 0.715. The unbiased Root Mean Square Error (ubRMSE) values ranged from 0.010 to 0.141 m3/m3, with an average ubRMSE of 0.041 m3/m3, which meets the accuracy of SMAP SM requirement of ubRMSE approximately 0.04 m 3/m3. The downscaled SM also showed good temporal consistency with the in-situ SM and exhibited a high response to the precipitation data. The downscaled SM not only maintained high spatial consistency with the original SMAP SM but also provides more detailed spatial SM variations.

ResumoThis study evaluated the relationship between different surface hydrometeorological variables and rainfall during the wet period of the South American Monsoon System (SAMS). A climatological study was performed for 30 rainy periods of the SAMS between the years 1991-2021 over the Central-West region of Brazil (WCB) (20-10◦ S and 60-50◦ W). The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5th/ERA5 was used to understand, under different soil moist conditions (dry, intermediate, and wet), the hydrometeorological patterns and their impacts on SAMS during the three stages of the wet period: the development (September-October-November, SON), maturity (December-January-February, DJF), and weakening (March-April-May, MAM) South American monsoon quarters. The results show that along with an increase (decrease) in rainfall during the rainy season, there is also a significant increase (decrease) in both surface and subsurface volumetric soil moisture (θ) for the wet (dry) soil condition periods. However, the surface heat flux composites showed that the latent heat fluxes to the atmosphere (Hl) significantly exceeds the climatology during the SAMS development quarters (SON) for the wet soil group. In contrast, for the dry soil group, the significant increase of Hl, compared to the climatology, over the WCB occurred only during the SAMS maturity quarters (DJF), representing, in this last case, a significant injection of latent heat and consequently delayed evaporation (EV P) compared to rainy periods with wet soil, due to the low soil moisture content and the prevalence of dry convection over WCB. Regarding the sensible heat fluxes (Hs), it was observed drier (wetter) soils tend to exhibit values above (below) the climatological mean throughout all stages of SAMS evolution over the WCB. The 2-m air temperature (T2m) and planetary boundary layer height (P BLH) anomaly composites showed that for the wet (dry) soil group and with significant rainfall above (below) the climatological mean over the WCB, all evolution quarters were marked by a significant decrease (increase) in T2m and P BLH anomalies. Regarding the mechanisms of direct feedback between surface variables and rainfall associated with the SAMS, significant direct correlations were also observed between the mean rainfall of the SAMS rainy season and the mean values of active days duration (Dad), Hl 20 , Hs and the surface Soil Moisture Condition Index (SMCI1).
