ResumoThis work investigates the diurnal and seasonal behavior of the energy balance residual (E) that results from the observed difference between available energy and the turbulent fluxes of sensible heat (H) and latent heat (LE) at the FLUXNET BR-Ma2 site located in the Brazilian central Amazon rainforest. The behavior of E is analyzed by extending the eddy covariance averaging length from 30 min to 4 h and by applying an Information Flow Dynamical Process Network to diagnose processes and conditions affecting E across different seasons. Results show that the seasonal turbulent flux dynamics and the Bowen ratio are primarily driven by net radiation (Rn), with substantial sub-seasonal variability. The Bowen ratio increased from 0.25 in April to 0.4 at the end of September. Extension of the averaging length from 0.5 (94.6% closure) to 4 h and thus inclusion of longer timescale eddies and mesoscale processes closes the energy balance and lead to an increase in the Bowen ratio, thus highlighting the importance of additional H to E. Information flow analysis reveals that the components of the energy balance explain between 25 and 40% of the total Shannon entropy with higher values during the wet season than the dry season. Dry season information flow from the buoyancy flux to E are 3050% larger than that from H, indicating the potential importance of buoyancy fluxes to closing E. While the low closure highlights additional sources not captured in the flux data and random measurement errors contributing to E, the findings of the information flow and averaging length analysis are consistent with the impact of mesoscale circulations, which tend to transport more H than LE, on the lack of closure.

ResumoThe thermal (physical) energy storage rates (ESR) of the above-ground components of a terra firme forest site in central Amazonia, Brazil, were determined for a set of typical days during the dry season of 2003 and the wet season of 2004, and their relevance to the surface energy balance was studied. To obtain the ESR for the above-ground part of the biomass (trunks, branches and litter), thetemperatures of one trunk of adominant tree species of the forest site were measured at three height levels and several radial depths. To compute the ESR in the other parts of the above-ground biomass (twigs, leaves and small size components such as palmsand lianas) and the ESR atmospheric fraction, the temperature of the air wasmeasured at four different heights inside and above the forest. The air, trunks and other biomass components contributed 35%, 40%and 25%to the total daily ESR of the forest respectively. For the hourly values during themorning, the total ESRwasusually observed to be between 30 and 70Wm2, but with maxima that can exceed 90Wm2; during rain events minima as low as 200Wm2 were observed. During the night and at dawn and dusk, the total ESR may constitute a sizable fraction of the net radiation, on some occasions equaling, or even exceeding it. On a daily basis, values of the total ESR were observed to be between 40% and 5%of the net radiation, depending on the weather conditions during the day. Further, the inclusionof theESRtocompute the surfaceenergybalanceimproves its closure, mainlyduring the daylight period and, particularly, during themorning hours; but the best closure occurs for the days inwhich the daily balance of the total ESR is positive. Finally, simplified expressions are presented for those components of the ESR which do not depend on trunk temperature.

ResumoThe Amazon region stands out as Earth's largest and most prominent terrestrial convective center, significantly influencing precipitation patterns through the substantial net radiation at the Earth's surface (Rn). This radiation is further divided into sensible heat (H) and latent heat (LE) fluxes, underscoring the critical need to investigate the intricate exchanges of energy between ecosystems and the atmosphere while also scrutinizing the closure of the energy balance (EBC). Such studies are of paramount importance for gaining a comprehensive understanding of natural process dynamics. This research was undertaken to refine our comprehension of the temporal variability of energy fluxes, energy balance closure, and the phenomenon of evapotranspiration (ET) hysteresis in relation to key atmospheric variables, namely, Rn, air temperature, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD), within the central Amazon region. This investigation spanned a typical year (2014) and accounted for the influence of an El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event (2015). The findings illuminated that LE constituted the predominant component of the energy balance in both years, comprising approximately 70% of the total energy flux, except during the dry season of 2015 when H took precedence, accounting for 55% of the total energy exchange due to the ENSO event. The EBC exhibited an underestimation of turbulent fluxes (H + LE) of around 24% relative to the available energy (Rn - G). A more robust closure was observed during the dry period of 2015, reaching 82%, suggesting heightened uncertainty in LE estimates. In the context of ET, clockwise hysteresis loops were observed concerning air temperature and VPD. The relationship between ET and Rn displayed a linear response to solar radiation, with the intensity of ET hysteresis becoming more pronounced when correlated with air temperature and VPD.
