Palavras-Chave | inicialização superfície continental umidade do solo previsão sazonal modelo global atmosférico brasileiro inicialization land surface soil moisture seasonal forecast brazilian global atmospheric model |
ABSTRACT: The land surface is a fundamental component of numerical weather and climate forecast models due to the control of the partitioning of energy fluxes and the water balance, and its maximum influence is observed in the interval of weeks to months. For the seasonal forecast, the determining factor comes from the boundary conditions with slow variations and the soil moisture memory becomes essential for the forecast in this time scale. The present study aimed to understand the effects of land surface processes on the initialization of seasonal forecasts in the pre-rainy and rainy seasons of the South American Monsoon System. Two experiments with seasonal retrospective forecasts were built with the BAM, between 2000 and 2010, with a configuration similar to those used in the operational environment of the CPTEC/INPE. The control experiment comprises the four seasons of the year and the experiment with a new field of soil moisture covers the austral spring and summer. The new initial condition of the land surface was obtained from the combination of the LIS with the surface scheme IBIS to generate the soil moisture field over South America (SALDAS), combined with the GLDAS for the rest of the globe. Initially, the control experiment was evaluated to verify its representation of the main climatic features, and it presented a good performance, subsequently, the differences between the experiments were analyzed to identify the effects of a change in soil moisture. The results demonstrated that the global model is sensitive to changes in soil moisture initialization and the effects were more noticeable for spring than for austral summer. The main result found in this research was, for the new initialization of soil moisture, the increase of the correlation in the forecast of seasonal precipitation for areas in which global models of climate prediction, normally, do not present satisfactory performance, as the central region of South America. Although the change in soil moisture has not modified the large-scale patterns over South America, an improvement in the representation of surface fluxes, an increase in soil moisture content, and specific humidity at medium and low levels of the atmosphere were observed over the continent. The strength of the coupling between the land surface and the atmosphere was also analyzed over three areas of South America: Amazon Basin, Central Brazil and La Plata Basin. This analysis demonstrated that for the Amazon and La Plata Basins, the surface fluxes are predominantly regulated by the availability of soil moisture in the model, such a result is contradictory to the ERA5-Land reanalysis and is associated with the fact that the model underestimates soil moisture. In Central Brazil, the states of the land surface also define the surface fluxes as the ERA5-Land, however, there are points with strong atmospheresurface coupling, and in this region, the greatest variability and difference between the experiments is observed. |
