ResumoThe onset and demise of the rainy season in Amazonia are assessed in this study using meteorological data from the GoAmazon experiment, with a focus on the 2014 2015 rainy season. In addition, global reanalyses are also used to identify changes in circulation leading to the establishment of the rainy season in the region. Our results show that the onset occurred in January 2015, 23 pentads later than normal, and the rainy season during the austral summer of 2015 contained several periods with consecutive dry days in both Manacapuru and Manaus, which are not common for the wet season, and resulted in below-normal precipitation. The onset of the rainy season has been strongly associated with changes in large-scale weather conditions in the region due to the effect of the MaddenJulian Oscillation (MJO). Regional thermodynamic indices and the height of the boundary layer did not present a significant difference between the onset and demise of the wet season of 2015. This suggests that local changes, such as those in the regional thermodynamic characteristics, may not have influenced its onset. Thus, variability of the large-scale circulation was responsible for regional convection and rainfall changes in Amazonia during the austral summer of 20142015.

ResumoOnset and end of the rainy season in the Amazon Basin are examined for the period 1979- 96. The onset and end dates are determined by averaging daily rainfall data from many stations, and then constructing 5- day averages (pentads). Onset (end)is defined as the pentad in which rainfall exceeds (falls below)a given threshold, provided that average rainfall was well below (above)the threshold for several pentads preceding onset (end), and well above (below)the threshold for several pentads after onset (end). For the criteria chosen, the climatological onset progresses toward the southeast, arriving in mid- October, and then toward the mouth of the Amazon, arriving near the end of the year. The end dates are earliest in the southeast and progress toward the north, but withdrawal is slower than onset. The onset dates, however, are quite sensitive to changes in the threshold. If the threshold is doubled, for example, the sense of onset is reversed, with onset occurring toward the northwest. Changes in threshold do not change the direction of the progression of the end of the rainy season. The central Amazon shows the largest variation in the date of onset. In several years, onset in the southeast occurs before that in the central Amazon, but onset near the mouth is always latest. There is an unexpectedly low relationship between the length of the rainy season and total accumulation. Likewise, there is little relationship between the onset (and end)date and the total accumulation. Composites of outgoing longwave radiation and the low- level wind field show that in the central Amazon, onset is associated with an anomalous anticyclone and enhanced trade winds in the Atlantic. Near the mouth of the Amazon, however, onset is associated with large- scale northerly anomalies, and the zonal component of the trade winds is reduced. There is an apparent association between sea surface temperature anomalies in the tropical Atlantic and Pacific and the pentads of onset and end of the rainy season in the northern and central Amazon, and near its mouth. The sense is that a warm Pacific and cold Atlantic result in a delayed onset and early withdrawal. Although the strong El Nino of 1982/ 83 and La Nina 1988/ 89 were examples of a delayed and early onset, respectively, the relationships it still holds these years are not considered.

ResumoThe relationships between the rainy season and corn yields in São Paulo State were investigated. The results showed that rainfall and corn yields are strongly positively correlated in most of the region, particularly in the northeastern, eastern, northwestern and western parts of the state (i.e. values are higher than 0.5 significant at 95% confidence level). The analysis of the trends in the duration of the rainy season and the associated accumulated precipitation showed a tendency of higher precipitation and shorter rainy seasons. It has been suggested to be due to global warming. Although rainfall and crop yields were positively correlated, an increase in heavy rainfall events in future may lead to landslides, flash floods and consequently crop damage. During the period 1970-2003 there was an increase of the rainy season and rainfall in strong El Niño episodes while in the case of La Niña events the rainy season was shorter and the rainfall decreased. Results of case studies considering the 1997-98 El Niño and the 1998-99 La Niña suggested that the increase (decrease) of the duration of the rainy season during the El Niño (La Niña) event is associated with the increase (decrease) of corn yields in São Paulo State. Further studies with a record of corn yields longer than 14 years and considering other El Niño/La Niña episodes are needed to obtain a firm connection between corn yields and ENSO events in São Paulo State.

ResumoThe present work provides a new methodology to determine onset dates of the rainy season (ONR) in central Amazon (CAM) using the antisymmetric in relation to the equator outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) (AOLR) data, for the 19792006 period. Spatial averages of the AOLR () over the CAM for the ONR periods are obtained. These periods correspond to 25 pentads centered on the mean pentad for the ONR. The sign changes from positive to negative of the for the ONR periods indicate the transition from dry to wet season. Composites of several variables are done for pentads before and after the ONR dates. These composites show physically consistent features. The potential of the time series as an index for monitoring tasks is analyzed. The results here show that the for the ONR period captures the transition from dry to wet conditions in the CAM area during 2006. The advantages of this method are discussed. The new simple method proposed here seems to be efficient in determining the ONR in the CAM.

ResumoThe seasonal cycle of precipitation in tropical South America is determined by the monsoonal system. The transition from dry to wet season occurs in austral spring (September-November, SON) when intense convection from northwestern South America rapidly shifts southwards to the southern Amazon Basin and western-central Brazil (WCB) in October and further to the southeast of Brazil in November. This study evaluates ability of the global atmospheric model, Global Eta Framework (GEF), at 25-km horizontal resolution, to simulate the onset of the rainy season in WCB region. The simulations are based on a five-member ensemble seasonal integrations for the years 2011 and 2013. Evaluation of mean global simulated fields, such as 200-hPa wind, 500-hPa geopotential height, 850-hPa temperature and wind, and MSLP at the surface, for the SON period indicates high level of agreement with reanalyses and observations, both in spatial distribution and intensity for most of the variables. The variable of the lowest skill is precipitation, which is overestimated over some tropical oceanic regions and underestimated over tropical continental regions, including South America. The onset of the rainy season is determined using methods based on precipitation and outgoing long-wave radiation (OLR). The threshold based on simulated precipitation is also calculated as an alternative method for defining monsoon onset. Comparison of the 5-day averaged values (pentads) of precipitation and OLR of all members of the ensemble and the ensemble mean against the observed data shows the ability of GEF to reproduce the typical pattern of transition from dry to wet season in WCB, although most of ensemble members tend to underestimate precipitation and overestimate OLR. The onset date is delayed for few pentads in the model simulations.

ResumoRainfall in South America as simulated by a 24-ensemble member of the ECHAM 4.5 atmospheric general circulation model is compared and contrasted with observations (in areas in which data are available) for the period 1976-2001. Emphasis is placed on determining the onset and end of the rainy season, from which its length and rain rate are determined. It is shown that over large parts of the domain the onset and ending dates are well simulated by the model, with biases of less than 10 days. There is a tendency for model onset to occur early and ending to occur late, resulting in a simulated rainy season that is on average too long in many areas. The model wet season rain rate also tends to be larger than observed. To estimate the relative importance of errors in wet season length and rain rate in determining biases in the annual total, adjusted totals are computed by substituting both the observed climatological wet season length and rate for those of the model. Problems in the rain rate generally are more important than problems in the length. The wet season length and rain rate also contribute substantially to interannual variations in the annual total. These quantities are almost independent, and it is argued that they are each associated with different mechanisms. The observed onset dates almost always lie within the range of onset of the ensemble members, even in the areas with a large model onset bias. In some areas, though, the model does not perform well. In southern Brazil the model ensemble average onset always occurs in summer, whereas the observations show that winter is often the wettest period. Individual members, however, do occasionally show a winter rainfall peak. In southern Northeast Brazil the model has a more distinct rainy season than is observed. In the northwest Amazon the model annual cycle is shifted relative to that observed, resulting in a model bias. No interannual relationship between model and observed onset dates is expected unless onset in the model and observations has a mutual relationship with SST anomalies. In part of the near- equatorial Amazon, there does exist an interannual relationship between onset dates. Previous studies have shown that in this area there is a relationship between SST anomalies and variations in seasonal total rainfall.

ResumoA new method to determine the onset dates of the rainy season (ONR) in the Central Amazon area using the antisymmetric in relation to the equator outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) data was developed in a previous paper. This method is adjusted and used here to determine the ONR in Western-Central Brazil (WCB). The adjustment is needed because of the northwest-southeast (NW-SE) orientation of the American monsoon-related convection displacement. The area averages of the OLR (AOLR) are used to identify the ONR dates. The ONR dates in WCB based on the precipitation index determined in a previous work are used as reference for comparisons. The differences between the results with the AOLR method and those shown in previous papers, as well as the advantages of this method are discussed, using composite maps of OLR and maps of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation data for individual years. The results obtained here for the WCB indicate a potential of the new method for monitoring purposes because the OLR data can easily be obtained and the AOLR calculation is very simple.

ResumoThe biosphereatmosphere interactions associated with the rainy season onset in South America (SA) are not well understood. This study aimed to analyze the atmospheric and surface patterns associated with early, neutral, and late rainy season onset in tropical regions of SA. The following years represented each rainy season onset: 1998, 2006, 2009 (early), 2001, 2004, 2005 (neutral), 2000, 2007, 2008 (late). The early (late) onset were negative (positive) rainy season onset date anomalies in comparison to the climatological mean (19982016) over central SA. Distinct atmospheric conditions were identified in the early and late rainy season onset. In the early onset, the northwesterly moisture flux and moisture advection were higher than average over central-east SA, where the precipitation increased. In the late onset, precipitation was enhanced in northwest SA and the configuration of multiple atmospheric blocking episodes contributed to delay the rainy season onset. Surface conditions also contributed to both the early/late rainy season onset. In the early onset, wetter and cooler pre-onset conditions over the central-east SA were verified. In the late onset, surface conditions were dry and warm before onset. Even though the atmospheric instability was promoted by the increase in sensible heating, dry atmospheric conditions were not favorable to deep convection, thus delaying the onset. These findings highlight how the onset variability promotes different atmospheric and surface patterns in SA. The results will contribute to the development of weather and climate models to better represent the rainy season onset focusing on biosphereatmosphere processes improvements.

Surface Processes
South American Monsoon System
Vegetation Map
ResumoThe onset of the South American Monsoon System (SAMS) is characterized by the rapid shift of intense convective activity from the northwestern Amazon basin to southern South America (SA), and determines the timing of the rainy season onset. Surface-atmosphere interactions affect the large-scale circulation and consequently influence the SAMS. Climate models that include realistic representation of these biophysical processes are therefore expected to provide more accurate predictions of weather and climate over the SAMS region. The objective of this study was to evaluate how atmospheric forcings affected land surface processes in years when the rainy season onset occurred early (2006-2007), neutral (2004-2005) and late (2008-2009). Experiments were performed using the Integrated BIosphere Simulator (IBIS) model, forced with reanalyses data. The sensitivity of the IBIS model was evaluated using two different vegetation maps: a natural map (NAT, which did not account for land-cover change, LCC) and an updated map (DEG), which merged the original map with a LCC map of the Brazilian territory. In the updated map, degraded natural biomes in the Brazilian territory (mainly the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado) were replaced by cultivation areas or pasture and, for this reason, showed changes in the surface variables. Simulations were performed offline to assess the impact of changing the land surface cover with the atmospheric state forcing. The difference between the simulations with the NAT and the DEG map was calculated for SeptemberNovember (SON) and December¬February (DJF). These differences showed that, DEG simulations have reduced soil moisture over the central and southern Brazil area in SON and DJF compared to the NAT simulations. In the same area for DEG simulations, the albedo increased, and thus more short-wave radiation was reflected in response to the reduction in soil moisture, resulting in reduction of latent and sensible heat fluxes at the surface. The replacement of forest-type vegetation (Atlantic Forest) by shorter vegetation (pasture) also induced a reduction in evapotranspiration, contributing to the reduction of latent heat flux. In SON, the long wave emission temperature decreased in an area close to the São Paulo States coast. This occurred because the reduction of surface roughness increased flow along the eastern coast, promoting cooling in this area. However, in DJF, the temperature increased, when the eastern flow is less intense. Other variables were analyzed, as net primary productivity and leaf area index, which also presented differences between the two simulations NAT and DEG. Overall, the simulation differences occurred mainly due to the vegetation map cover change (NAT and DEG). Even though the onset timing (early, neutral and late) had only a subtle effect on the results, updating the vegetation map was found to have a greater impact on surface processes in the early onset year experiments, a pattern that needs to be further investigated. The final step in the analysis will be to investigate whether using the updated vegetation map reduces the differences between the simulations and the observational data, mainly over the area 15-25°S, 40-50°W, where the natural biomes were more degraded.
