Inherent optical properties
ResumoAmazon floodplain lakes range widely in concentrations of optically active constituents (OAC) driven by seasonality in hydrological and biogeochemical processes, but in general they are characterized by high turbidity (NTU from 90 to 1645) compared to coastal waters. In this work, instruments for measuring inherent optical properties (IOPs) of water bodies were evaluated for the first time in floodplain lakes in the lower Amazon River during the falling limb of the hydrograph. Water column profiles of total attenuation and absorption were measured using the Spectral Absorption and Attenuation Meter (AC-S-WETLabs), and of backscattering using Hydroscat. These measurements, however, are subject to uncertainties and require corrections for turbid waters. In this paper, we assessed the implications of scattering correction methods for the absorption tube, proposed by the AC-S manufacturer, in the simulation of the Remote Sensing Reflectance (Rrs). The closure experiment comparing Hydrolight (Mobley & Sundman, 2001) simulated Rrs and in situ Rrs demonstrated that neither of the corrections was able to thoroughly account for the scattering errors which were propagated to the absorption measurements with AC-S and backscattering with Hydroscat. The three scattering correction methods (Flat, Proportional and Kirk) either under or overestimated the absorption coefficient that resulted in either under or overestimation of the simulated Rrs. Flat and Proportional Methods resulted in an underestimation of Rrs from 400 to 550 nm and overestimation from 600 to 700 nm, indicating that the assumption of zero (0) absorption in the near infrared does not apply to inland turbid water. The Rrs errors varied also according to water OAC composition. Overall, Kirk correction method provided the best results regarding the spectral shape of the Rrs, however, failed to account for magnitude. Based on the tuning tests, the errors in spectra magnitude seem to be sensitive to the constant fraction of scattering (CFS) used in the Kirk method. Tests carried out with CFS values varying from 0.18 to 0.38 indicated that magnitude error can be partially overcomed by tuning CFS according to water composition. Improvements in the scattering correction methods are required in order to obtain reliable IOPs in turbid inland Amazon lakes.

ResumoGiven the importance of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the carbon cycling of aquatic ecosystems, information on its seasonal variability is crucial. In this study we assess the use of optical absorption indices available in the literature based on in situ data to both characterize the seasonal variability of DOM in a highly complex environment and for application in large-scale studies using remote sensing data. The study area comprises four lakes located in the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve (MSDR). Samples for the determination of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and measurements of remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) were acquired in situ. The Rrs was used to simulate the response of the visible bands of the Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI), which was used in the proposed models. Differences between lakes were tested using the CDOM indices. The results highlight the role of the flood pulse in the DOM dynamics at the floodplain lakes. The validation results show that the use of the absorption coefficient of CDOM (aCDOM) as a proxy of the spectral slope between 275 and 295 nm (S275295) during rising water is worthwhile, demonstrating its potential application to Sentinel-2 MSI imagery data for studying DOM dynamics on the large scale.

ResumoGiven the importance of DOM in the carbon cycling of aquatic ecosystems, information on its seasonal variability is crucial. This study assesses the use of available absorption optical indices based on in situ data to both characterize the seasonal variability of the DOM dynamics in a highly complex environment and their viability of being used for satellite remote sensing on large scale studies. The study area comprises four lakes located at the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve (MSDR). Samples for the determination of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) were acquired in situ. The Rrs was applied to simulate MSI visible bands and used in the proposed models. Differences between lakes were tested regarding CDOM indices. Significant difference in the average of aCDOM (440), aCDOM spectra and S275295 were found between lakes located inside the flood forest and those near the river bank. The proposed model showed that aCDOM can be used as proxy of S275295 during rising water with good validation results, demonstrating the potential of Sentinel/MSI imagery data in large scale studies on the dynamics of DOM.

ResumoThe impact of sub-micron particles on total absorption and scattering coefficients has been investigated in different aquatic environments with results showing low impact. At the Amazon floodplain lakes, however, the choice of different pore size filters to separate dissolved and particulate matter can have a significant impact on both coefficients. In this study the role of the 0.2-0.7 gap was investigated in Amazon floodplain lakes. The first set of sampled lakes is located within the first and largest Sustainable Development Reserve in Brazil dedicated to the protection of the Amazonian floodplain, whist the remaining lakes are located in a human impacted region of the Amazon basin. Moreover, the lakes are also affected by the interplay of the Amazon and Tapajos rivers, what brings high variability to their optical properties. Measurements were taken with a 10 cm AC-S on deck, after filtration by a 0.2 and 0.7 micron filters. Laboratory spectrophotometry and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were also performed to validate ACS measurements and investigate the nature of sub-micron particles. Results show that the 0.2-0.7 gap can represent up to 40% of the particulate absorption coefficient depending on the lake hydrological characteristics and proximity to the Amazon and Tapajos rivers. The same impact was not observed in the scattering coefficient reaching only up to 10% of the total scattering coefficient. SEM also demonstrated that the 0.2-0.7 gap presented a significant load of inorganic material which indicates that the absorption coefficient is not only related to the organic fraction of the particulate.
